From the 14th century until the year 1802 the Schwörtag (literally: “day of vowing”) was considered the central political event in Reutlingen and a general festive occasion. On that day, the mayor of the free imperial city was elected by the citizens and sworn in, celebrating an early form of democracy.
Reutlingen continues to honor this tradition annually with a long weekend, filled with vibrant events. Following age-old customs, the mayor pledges to perform their duties fairly and impartially.
